Their breeding is easy and they can be fed on almost any food.

Since guppy fish are live bearers these are relatively easy for breeding as compared to egg layers fishes. For breeding you will need a healthy pair of guppy fish. If you are using one male per female then there may be chances that male will stress out females for breeding attempt. So in this case provide lots of hiding places for female in aquarium. Or you can put 3 females per male. Then in second case you may get 3 pregnant guppies. When males and females are present together then breeding will take place in most cases. Sometimes it is observed that female guppy fish are already pregnant when you buy them from fish tank shop. You can tell it by looking at belly if you find dark spot known as gravid spot then female guppy fish is already pregnant.

The aquarium should be 10 gallons or more.Set the temperature to 77 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Provide them protein rich food, live food will be the best choice but other will also do fairly well. Change the 25 % of water per week to encourage breeding. The gestation period of female guppy fish is about one month then she will release 10-40 babies in 1-2 hrs.The female are capable of giving birth for many months even in absence of males. When female is about to give birth then her belly will become thick and you can see gravid spot. Also you can notice some change in behaviour that is she may eat less food or move slowly.

If you are having only one main fish tank.

If you are having only one main fish tank. Then there may be high chances that the new born babies will get eaten by the mother or other fishes. However mother guppy fish is not interested in eating till she give birth to all babies it may take about 1 hour. So you have further choices.

If you are having fairly large aquarium then you can provide lots of hiding places by adding fake or live plants. You can add java moss or java fern. Add floating type aquarium plants and remember the other fish should not be able to see or access the babies. Remove the gravels before hand because fry of guppy fish may die if gravels fall on them. You can use spawning mop to provide hide out and caves made up of rock and marble chips.

If you want to go for another option there is 2 other equipment available in market known as breeding box and breeding net. Breeding box is plastic chamber in which you can put the pregnant female. While she give birth the babies enter to another chamber present at the bottom of it through the holes while mother guppy fish can not. Here you have to put the female while she is giving the birth or before hand. Here you need not to be present at the time of birth.

The other option is breeding net. It is box made up of net and it can be attached to the Wall of aquarium. You can put the females in it but you need to be present because here babies will be present with the mother. When she complete giving birth then move her to main tank. The breeding net will provide protection from adult fishes in same aquarium. The breeding net should be present where proper temperature and water circulation is maintained.

If you are having separate fish tank.

Then put the breeding pair in separate aquarium. When female give birth to babies after that remove back the female to main aquarium. The size of this separate aquarium must be 5 gallon or more. Remember not to add gravels and use fish tank sponge filter. If you are using any other powerful aquarium pump then they may get sucked up in fish tank pump or fish tank filter. So decrease their power or tight their ends. So they may not get sucked up. If you have moved the guppy fry from main aquarium then add water of main aquarium and try to maintain same parameter as of main tank. Do 25% water changes per 3-4 day.

Feeding and Care of Fry:

Feed the fry brine shrimps, newly hatched daphnia or you can give them hard boiled egg's yolk the yellow portion of egg. Form a thick paste of egg yolk then add very tiny amount of it.Try not to add it in extra amount, if possible remove the remaining food from aquarium other wise it may spoil. But doing so don't harm the babies. You cab also crush the flake food then form a paste then give to guppy fry. Give them 4-5 times in a day but in very small amount. As i have told you earlier cover any suction device if present. Switch on the light for 14 to 16 hours only. Set the temperature to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

They like brackish water in tank so put 1 teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallon of water. They can survive in wide range of temperature 23 degrees to 30 degrees Celsius. Provide them lots of hiding places and live plants to decrease stress on them in the form of fish tank decorations. Try to put 2 -3 females per male because male may chase female for breeding and females will get exhausted and may die. Change about 25 % of water once in a week. Do not mix any large fish other wise guppy will serve as food for them. Also don't put them with any fin nipping fish.

This is quite confusing to tell difference between male and female angelfish. You can get idea by looking at their body feature but this is not 100 percent valid until you wait for spawning time.

Generally it is observed that male angelfish have more rounded crown or area right above their eyes. Males grow faster as compared to females. Males have more fatty and robust body ascompared to female. Females have straighter line of their dorsal , or top fin , to their eyes. By observing their behaviour you can again get some idea of difference. Males show their papilla when the females are around.

Papilla : This is pencil point size pink organ which is located between ventral and anal fin of angelfish. Above picture is having both male and female.This is generally observed near the spawning period. The female will show bulge in this area when she is gravid that is carrying eggs. While the females papilla is more blunt and wider. During spawning females lays eggs on tilted flat surface and then males will touch the eggs with its papilla.

You must be knowing that all molly fishes are same species so you can breed any one of them with any other Molly fish. Breeding is very simple task. You need one male dalmation molly and few females with good water conditions. The number of females should be more then the males because males like to chase female dalmation molly, this makes females more stressed. She can even give birth to several batches of babies over a year even in absence of males because of their sperm holding capacity. Before hand you should also arrange home for new babies else avoid their breeding. If female dalmation are stressed then they may give birth to unhealthy babies or immature babies. So try to put lots of hiding places for females.

The gestation period of females is of about 30 -40 days. Females will start becoming more rounder as the time pass. When the female will about to give birth her stomach shape will be like \___/. Then females will give birth directly to fries. Remember they are live bearers. Dalmation molly will give birth about 30-40 fries at a time in time of about 1-2 hrs. In my case they give to birth to 30 babies in 1 go and on the next day she again give birth to 10 babies.

Remember to shift the mother or any other fish away from babies in separate fish tank otherwise dalmation molly will eat the babies. However mother dalmation will not react to babies while she is delivering the babies but after process is complete then she may try to eat them.

You can use breeding nest if you are not having any separate fish tank for babies development. Breeding nest is made of separate net fitted on plastic structure and you can attach it in main fish tank. You can also go for breeding box which have separate chamber for fish on the top from fish fries may pass to bottom chamber where no other adult fish can access. You can put babies in it till they grow enough that is about for 1 month.In these you should have proper water circulation and steady temperature.

If you are putting them in separate fish tank then remove gravels from the tank else fries will be crushed under them and use sponge filter so fry may no got suck in any other filter. Feed the babies crushed flake food and try to avoid disturbance to them. Then 25 % of water in a week.Don't over feed them. If you are having live plants in tank of babies it will benefit them.

Difference between male and female dalmation molly

It is very easy to distinguish between male and female dalmation molly. Female bodies are more round while the male are slender in shape. The most common and easy method to distinguish is that female have fan shape anal fin while the male have more developed fin known as gonapodium. Which is used to pass sperms in female body. Also males are more aggressive and like to chase females. So it important that number of females should be more as compared to males and their should be lots of hiding places in fish tank. The above one is male and below one is female. Look at the anal fin to distinguish them. The male's have thin stick shape fin while female's fin is broad and fan shape. These body features can be easily observed in other mollies and many live bearers species.

can i add table salt in aquarium

Common table salt which we use in our food is NaCl with some amount of iodine and other useful additives. Many of us had fishes who got suffer with some parasites infections like itch and salt treatment method is extremely help full to treat fishes with itch infections.

But as i have already told that table salt contains iodine and many people believes that iodine is extremely dangerous to aquarium fishes but on the other hand many people also believe that it is harmless. Actually there is controversy over this. So it is recommended to use kosher salt if you don't want to take risk. However i would like to share my personal experience with you all people.

My personal experience :

I was having 2 rosy barb and few black skirt tetras. Everything was working fine then i decided to brought 2 more tetras to the same aquarium. I went to aquarium dealer and bought 2 more. Without noticing them i added them to main tank and what i found they were having white spots all over their body and in next few days i found that each and every fish are having white spot and those poor fishes were rubbing with each other and also with filters trying to get some relief. Then i went through google and decided to add iodized table salt because it was present in the kitchen. I couldn't resist my self. I added table salt, i added 1 spoon per gallon and raised aquarium temperature to 32 degree Celsius. But everything was fine and after 4-5 days i found that itch had been disappeared and every fish is living fine till now. So finally i would suggest that you can add it at your own risk or may be i am lucky.
